My first trip to America – California 2019

2018 was a great year, but my experiences in Los Angeles should top that, at parties with Drake’s dad, at Dan Bilzerian’s home, or in the Mustang to Las Vegas!

In this blog post I will tell you everything!

The first impressions of Los Angeles

I arrived in Los Angeles during the night and it was so crazy to see all the lights of LA from the plane. I took an Uber to the hostel, which I had booked for a few days. Unfortunately there are two hostels with the same name and i went to the wrong one. I took another Uber and went to the right hostel, what a perfect start! It was right on Hollywood Boulevard and I thought it would be a good location for my first accomodation in LA. But when I got there, I realized, Los Angeles has a lot of homeless people. I was a little afraid to walk through the streets. The hostel was a dump and I slept with four others in the room. I’m not going to tell you more about it!

The next day I went up to the Hollywood Sign. The weather was hazy and foggy. Not a nice first day to get to know Los Angeles. The city was pretty grey, a lot of concrete and garbage and many homeless people. When I went down the Hollywood Boulevard in the afternoon, I really expected something different. It’s more like a garbage dump than the big Hollywood Boulevard you know from TV. But when I got out of Hollywood it was very nice, Beverly Hills, the Rodeo Drive and also Santa Monica were so beautiful with palm trees on the sides, beautiful cars and beautiful people.

The city itself is just too big and you can not take public transport, which annoyed me. Sometimes you need more than 1.5 hours from Santa Monica to Hollywood.

Party in Los Angeles

From my time in Germany I was used to a lot, but in Los Angeles the whole nightlife is even more exhausting than in Germany. The clubs are closing at 2:00 am, but you will go to the Hills for an afterparty. Every single day is a big party and you have the chance to have the best night ever, depending on which celebrities are in the club. For example I met Drake’s dad at the club and went to an after-show party with him.

In the clubs you can only get in if you know the promoters, since it is not for the “normal” public. I was lucky that I got to know a few promoters through Instagram and came into the clubs. There I met a lot of people, for example Bianca Ghezzi one of the assistants of Dan Bilzerian. That’s why I came to Dan Bilzerian’s house to do a series for the Bachelor Ignite season with Billie Jo Powders. His house is just crazy. He has everything you need, a gym, a pool, rooftop, billiard, punching bag and much more!

Road trip to Las Vegas / Grand Canyon – is it worth it?

The city that everyone knows from movies was definitely on the list to visit for a long time. It’s only about 6 hours  from Los Angeles by car. We rented a Mustang convertible for a weekend and drove there for a couple days. It was less about the city Las Vegas, it was more about the road trip itself and just the roads of America and the freedom to enjoy. We made a stopover at Hoover Dam and then came to Las Vegas. Las Vegas was not as pompous as I thought. It was just a street where 16 huge hotels are lined up.

Our hotel was one of the oldest at the very beginning of the street. It is called Circus Circus. When we made our way to our room, we were amazed. We had a theme park in our hotel, with two roller coasters, casino and shops. In Las Vegasall the casinos are in the hotels. The first night we went to the casino in Cesar Palace and into a strip club after. On the second day we went to a pool party where the Chainsmokers hung up and in the evening we went for some food.

The next day we went to the Grand Canyon, because it is only about 2-3 hours away by car from Las Vegas. The Grand Canyon is definitely the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen. I couldn’t stop looking down the canyon. Unfortunately we did not do a helicopter flight. That would be something I would do the next time. I can highly recommend to visit Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon.

Road trip to San Diego – Must do?

One week after Las Vegas, we did another road trip to San Diego. A buddy and I took the train this time. I had a friend in San Diego where we stayed for two days. He also showed us around. Mission and Pacific Beach are the two main beaches in San Diego. They have a much better beach vibe than the beaches in Los Angeles, especially for teens (lots of bars, lots of party, nice promenade). It’s a great place to get down. The city with Little Italy and all the bars is really cool and it is not big as Los Angeles. We also went to San Diego ZOO and SEA LIFE, which I really can’t recommend. I got bored after a few hours.

San Diego is a very cool city and I highly recommend a trip from Los Angeles to San Diego.

Road Trip – East Coast Australia – # 9 Work and Travel Australia 2018

What is Australia without road trips? I believe that anyone who visits Australia just wants to have the best time of their lives! And a road trip is the perfect opportunity to have the best time with unforgettable experiences! December 2018 was this time for me. I was on a month-long road trip with my best friends Charlie Taylor, Kevin Delan and Carlos Böttcher!

In this blog post I will give you more insight into our great time along the East Coast of Australia!

Our vehicle – The ultimate dream campervan

If you go on a road trip, you should definitely think about which campervan to go with!

We were a group of 4 so we decided to go with a huge family campervan. On one hand, it lessens some of the road trip feeling. On the other hand, everyone has a lot more space and for a month, sometimes, you need that! We had 2 large beds with 2 people sleeping in each: a bed over the driver’s cab and a bed in the back of the campervan.

Here is a picture of our campervan:

Our Route – The East Coast of Australia

The route we chose was easy: just along the coast from Sydney to Cairns. Since I love to plan everything in advance, I planned this road trip quite a bit in advance.

Our mission was to get to Cairns in 28 days. Here’s a screenshot of my road trip planning notes!

And now, I want to share with you our stops along the route:

Stop 1: Narrabeen Beaches

The first stop was the beaches in the north of Sydney. After we got out of the city, we went to the beach to switch off for a bit!

But to be honest, it is a rather normal beach that you do not necessarily have to stop at or stay long 😉

Stop 2: Palm Beach

On the second day, we took a walk to the Lighthouse of Palm Beach. Palm Beach is a beautiful place to just relax and enjoy the sunset. The special thing about this beach is that there are beaches on both sides: one faces the sea and the other faces the bay. This is definitely a must see!

Stop 3: Hunter Valley

The following day we drove a bit into the country, in the direction of Hunter Valley. The Hunter region is the wine growing area Sydney and was really lovely. There are so many places to go wine tasting! We also went to a festival, which made Hunter Valley amazing, all over again.

Stop 4: Port Stephens / Nelson’s Bay

The beaches of Port Stephens and Nelson’s Bay are stunning! We had an incredibly relaxing time there. An insider tip is to go to the Tomaree Mountain to see the sunset. The views will transport you to Thailand! With an incredible view over the country, I think it was one of the best sunsets I have ever experienced.

Stop 5: Byron Bay

Everyone was raving about Byron Bay, so we had to make a stop there. But to be honest, Byron Bay was not that exciting. It is a small seaside town with a lighthouse. We were anticipating the incredible atmosphere that Byron Bay was recommended to have. However, we did not really experience that aura, because we did not live in a hostel. Furthermore, the weather was not the best. Maybe that was the reason that we did not find it as exciting as anticipated.

Stop 6: Gold Coast

The name Gold Coast alone tells you that it is an incredibly beautiful stretch along the East coast. It is, essentially, a city by the sea with many foothills. The party center, Surfers Paradise, is filled with skyscrapers and is very popular amongst teenagers. We stayed in a hotel in Surfers Paradise which was loads of fun, with 2 days of partying! Gold Coast was definitely worth stopping at.

Stop 7: Brisbane

Brisbane is the largest city in Australia after Sydney and Melbourne. They have a beautiful skyline and we rented the “lime scooters” to commute around. These electric scooters are available around every corner and you can rent them via an app. You pay a few cents a minute and it is definitely worth it, because you get to experience the whole city in a short amount of time!

My favorite place in Brisbane is the Southbank. It is on the other side of the river and you have a great view of the city. There are many restaurants, bars and an artificial lagoon that you can swim in!

Stop 8: Glasshouse Mountains

The Glasshouse Mountains are further north of Brisbane. We only made a little stop there. It is an experience close to their beautiful natural flora and you can definitely spend a few hours hiking there.

Stop 9: Fraser Island

This was my second time visiting Fraser Island. This time we booked a two-day tour to see everything on Fraser Island.

I would recommend renting a four-wheel drive from the start, or drive your own onto the island. It is just a lot more fun to spend a week driving on the island. You get to drive on the beach and there are many scenic spots to experience nature in the summer.

Stop 10: Airlie Beach / Whitsundays

Airlie Beach was definitely the coolest city I experienced on my trip!

It is a small town with many bars, restaurants, discos, and a lagoon. The lagoon is lovely and a great place to refresh yourself. You can spend several weeks, or even months of your trip at Airlie Beach!

We visited the Whitsundays on a sailboat and I have to say, Whitehaven Beach definitely impressed me. It is covered entirely in white sand, as you know it in the Caribbean! It was certainly worth it to spend A$450 for the experience.

Stop 11: Magnetic Island

Magnetic Island is a beautiful island, further up north than the Whitsundays. You can definitely spend a few days here. Even though there is not much going on, the island is more about relaxing, hikes and koalas. I even hugged a koala!

Stop 12: Mission Beach

Here, I felt like I was being transported back to Thailand! There were palm trees and coconuts everywhere on the beach. Unfortunately you cannot swim in the open sea because of crocodiles and jellyfishes. There is, however, a cordoned-off area for swimming. It was a lovely opportunity to have visited but this is not somewhere I would stay longer.

Stop 13: Daintree Rainforest

This is the oldest continually surviving tropical rainforest in the world: 200 million years old, 4 times older than the Amazon! On one square meter, you will find more plant and animal species than in all of North America. It was interesting and eye-opening to visit this “magical rainforest”. Definitely worth a stop.

Stop 14: Cairns

I expected a lot more from Cairns. We stayed there for 3 days over Christmas and it rained the whole time! So a tip for you: If you want to travel northern Australia, be sure to visit during the Australian winter. In the summer, Australia’s northern regions experience the wet and rainy monsoon season.

Disappointingly, Cairns was rather boring. There is a lagoon and a couple of restaurants but nothing too exciting.

I hope you got a little insight into my fun-filled and exciting road trip!

Roadtrip Great Ocean Road – Just incredible! – # 4 Work and Travel Australia 2018

I haven’t planed anything for my time in Australia. I knew that I would start in Melbourne. But what is next … I had no idea! Maybe I will travel the East Coast, maybe the West Coast, or maybe I will work and save money? In the end, I decided to travel the famous GREAT OCEAN ROAD for a week! I don’t regret this decision until today!

How did I plan the Roadtrip?

Approximately 2 weeks after my arrival in Melbourne I had settled down and I also found really good friends. I started to plan a bit what to do while my time in Melbourne. One of the most popular attractions is the Great Ocean Road. Basically, it’s a road that stretches for several hundreds of miles right on the coast and provides a terrific setting during the road trip! It’s a “must to do” when you are in Melbourne.

Since my newly found friends wanted to fly home within the next month, we did not have too much time to rethink it. Therefore, we sat together for a day, discussed and planned various options.

How do I best travel the Great Ocean Road?

The first option is to book a tour. Almost every hostel and travel agency offers a tour to the Great Ocean Road. The tour can take between 1 and 7 days. You will drive with a bus along the Great Ocean Road and can enjoy the great panorama from the bus. The bus will stop at many sightseeing points. Depending on how long you have booked the tour, there are also days you can spend at the beach! This option is definitely worth it, if you are too lazy to take over the planning yourself, if you have too much coal or if you just do not have time left, but still want to see the Great Ocean Road.

The second option would be to plan the tour by yourself and to rent a camper van or to travel with your own car. The advantage of this possibility: You can decide yourself when and where to take breaks, where to go and how long the tour should should be. Basically, you are a lot more flexible, the feeling is simply awesome and it’s even cheaper (if you do it with friends, with whom you can share the cost).

How do I plan the tour of the Great Ocean Road?

The planning is really easy. There are three things you need to plan to have an unforgettable road trip: the vehicle, the food, the route.

The vehicle.

Depending on what you have planned for while being in Australia will depend on what you  decide; Should I buy a car / camper van, or do I rent it? If you plan to travel to the east coast, it is definitely worth buying a car. But renting for a few days also fine!Since I did not have any specific plans regarding what I would like to travel in Australia, I decided with my friends to rent a camper van. For this we simply googled which companies offered to rent cheap camper vans, but you have to be careful! Most companies show only a net price, which is ridicules because there are many more added fees. We decided to use the company “Travellers Autobarn”, where we rented the Camper Van for the Great Ocean Road (see picture).

If you have compared several companies, you also have to decide which car / van you want to rent. Here in the picture you will find several alternatives, which are offered most often.

In the end, we decided on a Camper Van, where 3 people can sleep without a tent. This also has been good! Otherwise I would have been too afraid of spiders or snakes! We paid about $ 1000 for a week. So for each about $ 333. First, the van should cost $ 800 total. When we were on site, there were still costs for blankets, dishes, gas bottles and so on. In addition, you could still take out insurance for $ 25 a day, which is there in case something breaks the van or we build an accident. Since we were pretty shocked about the many costs, we did not choose an insurance. Luckily, everything went well! But next time I will definitely take an insurance. Because the vehicles usually have more than 400,000 kilometres and like to break down! But I’ll tell you more in the blog post about Tasmania!

The food.

After we picked up the camper van, we drove directly to the nearest supermarket and bought something to eat and drink. Actually, we had only pasta with minced beef every day and oatmeal with banana and kiwi in the morning. If you still need gas faucets for your gas cooker or other things, such as Sleeping bags, pillows, etc., then it’s the best to go to KMart. There you should actually find everything you need!

The route.

Depending on how long you want to travel the Great Ocean Road, you should already make an approximate plan, where you want to go and how long you want to plan for which sections. I was with my boys for a week on the Great Ocean Road. We drove along the coast to Skenes Creek and then through the Great Otway National Park. Then from Pricetown along the coast to Warrnambool. For this route we have planned about 4 days. Then the way back the entire coast to Melbourne in 3 days. (see image)

I think that was the perfect time! We did not have to rush and had enough time to look at everything and make longer stopovers. It did not get boring!!! We visited the following attractions during the whole trip (but there is much more, so google and plan your route!):

  • Bells Beach
  • Aireys Inlet
  • Great Otway National Park
  • Apollo Bay
  • Lavers Hill
  • London Arch
  • The Grotto
  • Cheese World
  • 12 Apostles

My experiences on the Great Ocean Road

The road trip of the Great Ocean Road was my first real road trip in a camper van in a foreign country. Therefore, the anticipation was huge! The vibe was great and we were singing in the car.

Stop 1 – Bells Beach

Our first stop was Bells Beach, one of the best surfing beaches on the Great Ocean Road. You can not imagine the goosebump I got when I saw the cliffs, the beach, the sea and the bright sun! Bells Beach was also our first stop where we stayed. It was just great! We listened to music, cooked and ate at this beautiful place!

Coz there were no lights in the area, we could see the Milky Way. I have rarely seen such a blatant. And I started to think about myself, my life and how small I actually am.I did not sleep that well that night. I woke up coz of every noice, because camping in Australia is allowed only on campsites and you get big fines if they see you at camping outside as camperside. But to save money, we took that risk all week on the Great Ocean Road. Luckily nothing happened!!!

TIP: Download the app WikiCampersAU. Here you will find everything about road trips. Places to stay, gas stations, etc.!

Stop 2 – Aireys Inlet

This lighthouse was the most unspectacular attraction of the road trip on the Great Ocean Road. It’s just a normal lighthouse. Maybe it was because the weather was not so good. With a beautiful sunset or sunrise, that looks really nice!

Stop 3 – Lorne

The city of Lorne was our next stop. It is a small town right on the beach. Since we had enough time and the weather was just nice and warm, we had decided to go surfing. It was the first time I was surfing. Although I had a beginner board but I found that I was not so crap. I even stood once for 10 seconds and surfed the wave 😊We paid about about $ 25 for 2 hours for the rental per person including the Wetsuit. This is the normal price in Australia.

Stop 4 – Great Otway National Park

Next stop was the Great Otway National Park. What expectations did I have for the National Park ?! None, since it was the first time I visited one. It felt like Im in a rainforest. There were big trees everywhere, it was green and there were many lianas on the road. The road meandered through the rainforest and it was really fun to drive the serpentines with the camper van. As we made our way through the Great Otway National Park, we considered where we could stop off. Our first stopover were the Erskine Falls. It was the first time for me to see a waterfall close up. Unfortunately it was too cold to swim in the pool under the waterfall. Furthermore, we stopped in Levers Hill. This was not so intoxicating. Next time I would skip this stop. All in all, the Great Otway National Park was not as exciting as I thought. It’s just a national park: D

Stop 5 – London Bridge and London Arch

After coming back from the Great Otway National Park to the coast, the next stops were London Bridge and London Arch. There were two rock formations right on the coast, which looked incredibly blatant in good weather. That was the feeling I was looking for in Australia. The only thing that destroyed the feeling were the many tourists. There were an incredible number of tourists at the viewpoints and it was difficult to take pictures as everyone stood there with their camera and wanted to do some as well.

Stop 6 – The Grotto and the 12 Apostles

The Grotto and the 12 Apostles were my highlights on the Great Ocean Road. The Grotto was really good! It was blatant to be able to look through this rock formation. The 12 apostles, however, were not so intoxicating as the weather was really shitty. It was cloudy and not really warm. Therefore the sky was grew and the sea too. On the way back, however, we stopped by the 12 Apostles again and got up especially at 6 o’clock in the morning to see the sunrise. This was definitely worth it !!

Conclusion

We made many other stops, but there were no real highlights. It was the feeling of the Great Ocean Road along the coast. I would recommend it to anyone and would like to do it again on occasion. A week was also the perfect time, because you had enough time to stop and not have to go through it. I really enjoyed the road trip and am looking forward to the next one.

In my next blog post you can read something about my trip to Tasmania. It was a two week road trip with amazing beaches, lakes and mountains! If you have any questions, feel free to email me, comment on the blog post or write me on Instagram @fabianxarnold!
